The Impact of Formulation on Carbon Footprint - An Interactive Workshop

Hosted by Jim Bullock, Intelligent Formulation

The scene for the Intelligent Formulation interactive workshop will be set with three short case studies (see below) on carbon footprinting and sustainability presented by speakers from GSK, Innospec and Chemistry Innovation KTN. After this attendees will work in break out groups to come up with ideas if how to use formulation expertise to reduce the carbon footprint and environmental impact of specific formulated products - which are likely to come from outside their own industry. Each group will then present their ideas to a panel of experts – with a prize for the winning team. We expect that the workshop will not only be fun but also allow participants to share best practice as well as to contribute and to learn from new ideas – so everyone will have something to take away at the end.

Lessons Learnt from Measuring Green Chemistry Performance
Richard Henderson, GlaxoSmithKline

GSK has been collecting Green Metrics for our new products in development for over 5 years.  The data enables us to develop strategies and tools to help improve performance and to allow project teams to benchmark their own project.  An overview of this data and analysis will be presented.

Different Strokes for Different Folks
Brian Watt, Innospec

A case study which explores how different industries are looking at carbon footprinting with entirely different needs, motivation and sometimes data requirements.
The presentation will compare and contrast the different needs of different industries, and outline Innospec's plans to respond to these needs.

Carbon Footprinting the Lifecycle of Products – the CCaLC Tool
Dr Mike Pitts: Chemistry Innovation Knowledge Transfer Network

This presentation introduces the CCaLC tool which enables estimations of carbon footprint and other environmental impacts along different manufacturing supply chains. Easy to use and accompanied by extensive lifecycle databases, it helps to identify ‘hot spots’ and carbon reduction opportunities. It also enables calculations of value added in the supply chain so that trade-offs with carbon-added can be analysed. For more information on CCaLC, please visit: www.ccalc.org.uk where you can download the CCalC tool for free.
